Exciting season ahead for Maroon cross-country

Dowling’s girls cross country team is already off to an exciting season, competing in their first meet at the Ankeny Invitational at the DMACC campus last Thursday, Aug. 25. The team has 27 seniors out this year, and plenty of younger fast runners.

Sophomore Kelsey Schweizer lead the Maroons finishing third overall in the freshman and sophomore race, followed by sophomores Kate Timboe and Sydnee Miller. Schweizer was also Dowling’s first runner, with a time of 20:03 in her first 5K of the season. Senior Rebecca Naughton and Junior Molly Flood lead the juniors and seniors, Rebecca placing 6th and Molly 8th.
After coming off a 9th place finish at state last year, the team is older and stronger. Kelsey said that as a team she hopes to finish at least 3rd at state and be able to accept the award on the podium in Fort Dodge. The Maroons will run again at the Urbandale Invitational at Urbandale Middle School Saturday, Sept. 3 at 9 a.m.
