Des Moines seems to always be getting new restaurants around town with all types of food. One new restaurant that stuck out for a lot of Iowans was Steak ‘N Shake! The franchise restaurant opened in West Des Moines on January 11th, 2021, and the drive-thru line has been non-stop since. Of all the restaurants that come to Des Moines, what made this franchise restaurant stand out?

Whether it be the diner atmosphere, famous shakes, or burgers, Steak ‘N Shake is packed almost every night. Located off of Mills Civic Parkway, the line is almost always wrapped around the building twice and sometimes even goes on to the street. Don’t come hungry though, you might be waiting in the line for more than an hour. 


Although the menu is limited compared to other locations, it still has the fan favorites. Their burgers are flavorful and filled with toppings. Their fries are small, thin, and crispy and loved by most.


Planning on getting a shake? Happy hour is every weekday from 2-5 p.m. You can get half priced shakes and drinks. With all types of different and fun options for shakes, there are some great choices to pick from, including seasonal options!


If you are planning on going to Steak ‘N Shake and happen to follow a meatless diet, try getting the grilled cheese, fries, of course, and a shake. With only one option for non-meat, the circumstance isn’t ideal, but this isn’t exactly out of the ordinary for most fast food franchises.

So, is it worth the 40 minute drive thru line wait? If you are urging to try the food as a first timer, maybe so. If you are willing to wait a few months for the rush to calm down, maybe do that instead. Steak ‘N Shake might just be the new favorite spot in the Des Moines area, but don’t get too excited, because there are always new restaurants right around the corner.
