Knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. These activities are all different types of needlecrafts, and they all probably sound like something your grandma would do. There are actually many young people, including myself, who enjoy doing these activities. Not only are they great hobbies, but they also help our overall well-being. All of these activities can easily be learned online through videos and websites. You never know what might pique your interest so, read below to learn about three different types of needlecraft that can become your new hobby!

Knitting:
In knitting, you use two knitting needles to complete your project. Knitting is a series of interconnected loops that are created through rows which then connect in columns. Each of these columns is built up row by row to complete whatever you are making. Some of the most common things to knit are hats, scarves, and sweaters (MSW).

Crocheting:
To crochet, you use a crochet hook to create designs from loops of yarn. There are many different types of stitches you use in crochet like; single crochet, double crochet, and half-double crochet. Some of the most popular things to crochet are blankets, stuffed animals, and granny squares (Sarah Maker).

Embroidery:
In embroidering, you use tools like hoops, needles, and threads to make your final product. In this craft, you create designs on fabric with thread and needles. There are many stitches you can use in embroidery to reach your desired design. Some common stitches are a backstitch, a lazy daisy stitch, and a running stitch. Some common things to embroider are clothes, bags, and shoes (Inspired Sewist).

Benefits:
Many studies have shown that needlecrafting is not only relaxing but also helps people manage stress. It has also shown that needlecrafting can improve physical health like lowering blood pressure. Needlecrafting has been shown to bring a social connection to people. Needlecrafting brings a sense of community to people and gives them friendships (T&F). Here at Dowling, we have the Knitting Club, which is actually open to any needle crafters, at any level. In this club, students are able to not only work on their latest projects, but also benefit from the community that is formed.
________________________________________________________________________________________
While it can be intimidating to start something new, people should consider needlecraft because of the variety of activities and the benefits it can bring to a person. I only learned last year how to crochet, and now, it is something I love to do in my free time. Give needlecrafting a chance, because, while it might seem like a boring grandma activity, there is a lot more to it.
