Under the bright glare of the stadium lights, the low hum of the crowd buzzed in Enzo’s ears, mixing with the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. Every eye was fixed on him, waiting to see if he’d deliver a strike, or crack under pressure. As he wound up for the pitch, time seemed to slow, everyone knew Enzo was going to make baseball magic happen.

When you meet Enzo Martin, you’re instantly struck by his humility and genuine passion for both his sports and his school community. A senior at Dowling Catholic, Enzo’s journey is a testament to dedication, positivity, and the special bonds formed in the Dowling community.
One of Enzo’s most treasured memories from his time at Dowling Catholic is forever linked to the adrenaline and excitement of the baseball diamond, a place that has been the backdrop for countless lessons, friendships, and moments of growth. As he told me about pitching in the first round of sub-state against Ottumwa, I could see his whole posture change: he straightened up, his eyes lit up with excitement, and a proud grin slowly formed on his face. You could sense the nerves and determination he felt at that moment, as well as the joy that came along with closing out the game for the win. This memory stands out not only because of the victory, but because it was a mix of several years of dedication, hard work, and unwavering support from coaches and teammates. It’s an experience that perfectly captures his ability to shine under pressure, while also reflecting the bond he shares with his teammates as they celebrated together on the field.
On the field, Enzo serves as a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, always ready to step up for his team. Off the field, he credits Coach Dropps, his prime time teacher freshman year and now a close friend, as a mentor who has helped shape his high school journey. “He’s been there for me since the beginning,” Enzo shares.
There’s even more to Enzo than meets the eye. Many may not know that he has committed to play baseball and continue his education at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., a dream come true and a source of pride in the Dowling community.
The brotherhood of his teammates is central to Enzo’s story. “They push me to be my best, and we hold each other accountable,” he says. And it’s not just about the game, Enzo loves the faith and support that define Dowling Catholic.

When it comes to game day, Enzo relies on routine to keep him grounded, and a bit of advice from Coach Sefrit, “Stop thinking so much when up to bat.” It’s a reminder to trust himself, have fun, and stay in the moment.
Outside of sports, Enzo’s heart belongs to the mountains. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, skiing was a big part of his life, and he’s grateful to still enjoy it here in Iowa. On weekends, you’ll find him on the field or hanging out with friends, making every moment count.
Looking back, Enzo is most proud of his growth, both as an athlete and as a person. “I like to see how much I’ve changed since freshman year,” he reflects. He credits his dad as his greatest role model: “He always puts others before himself in every aspect of his life.”
For younger students, Enzo’s piece of advice is simple but powerful: “Turn your work in on time and the hard work will pay off. As an athlete, enjoy every moment because you won’t know when it’s going to be the last time you play.”
As Enzo Martin prepares to leave Dowling Catholic, his legacy is one of kindness, perseverance, and gratitude. Enzo is a true example of what it means to be a Maroon.
