The recent release of Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, has sparked significant controversy within her community. The album was released to the public on October 3, 2025, keeping fans up until midnight, eagerly anticipating an album that was promised to focus on “quality over quantity.” We listened carefully to each song, examining the lyrics and rhythm in comparison to previous albums Swift has released. Our favorite album, Folklore, features well-thought-out lyrics and is artistically very advanced, so expectations were definitely high. However, after listening to The Life of a Showgirl, we felt mildly disappointed in the album.
Although disappointed, a few songs stood out to us in a more positive way. For example, “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite” were upbeat and fun to listen to. Although the lyrics were not as creative as her other songs, they proved to be tolerable and quite catchy. As the album progressed, however, so did our disappointment in the song quality. The lyrics in most of the songs were not what Swift listeners are used to. Taylor Swift is known for having profound lyrics that leave fans with a lingering, heavy feeling, as well as for good storytelling and wordplay in each song. The lyrics in The Life of a Showgirl were more straightforward, lacking the intricate language listeners expect, which contributed to the large number of disappointed fans and led to Swift receiving backlash for the album.
After talking to another Dowling student, Luci Lowe, we found our opinions on the album to be validated. She claims that, “This album is a great addition to her collection of different types of music, but I don’t feel as if this is her best work. I think she has peaked a little more in other albums, but that doesn’t take away from how creative, articulated, and detailed she is with all of her lyrics, music, rhythms, and beats, and overall, the amazing artist she is.” As a Swift fan herself, she doesn’t mind the album, as it includes some songs she enjoys, but it is certainly not her favorite.

The day after the release, social media was buzzing with opinions and thoughts on the songs, many of them negative. Swift faced backlash from listeners, who said the songs were cringey and basic, holding her to the standards of her previous albums. Despite the widespread criticism, some songs gained in popularity. “The Fate of Ophelia” has topped the Hot 100 for the third week in a row, proving that much of the hate on the album may be unwarranted. While many agree that this isn’t Swift’s most lyrically clever or detailed work, it still contains catchy tunes and rhythms that satisfy fans. Personally, it’s not our favorite, but it still has its pros and its targeted audience.
